Review: Geniuser – I Am
By Classic Pop | June 14, 2018
Wyndham Wallace reviews I Am, the latest release from alternative, electronic duo Geniuser.
That Geniuser’s previous releases slipped under the radar fits Michael Allen’s career: as leader of The Wolfgang Press, 4AD’s punk funk pioneers, he was revered yet rarely rewarded. This collaboration with Italian painter/producer Giuseppe De Bellis deserves better. Oozing malevolence, its dark grooves are viciously unsettling, not least the ugly grind of Man Of Sand, and Monkey, where heavy dub underpins washes of evil effects. By the pallid A Thousand Sorrows, though, Allen sounds burned out, while Find You finds him desperate. A perfect record for acutely imperfect times.
