Things Can Only Get Better as D:Ream reissue album

Last week, as a sodden Rishi Sunak stood outside Downing Street in the pouring rain to announce that there will be a July general election, his speech was met by the sound of D:Ream’s 90s club hit Things Can Only Get Better... When video footage went viral, the track entered the iTunes Top 10 and peaked at No.6.

Now, D:Ream’s debut album D:REAM ON Vol.1 has been remastered from the original master tapes and will be digitally reissued on 14 June through New State Music. This new digital-only reissue includes four bonus tracks only previously available on vinyl – a 12″ Vocal & 7″ instrumental mix of Things Can Only Get Better, plus two extra versions of U R The Best Thing, the Slow Hand Super Summer Disco Mix and (A Capella) Mix.

The release follows last year’s collection of the celebrated dance music duo’s greatest hits, The Best Thing, also remastered from the original two-inch tapes.

Things Can Only Get Better

Things Can Only Get Better has charted on multiple occasions before. In 1993 it reached No.16 then, a year later, it spent four weeks at No.1. It hit the charts again in 1997 when it was adopted by New Labour ahead of its landslide election victory.

As well as Things Can Only Get Better, D:REAM ON Vol.1 contains another five Top 40 UK hit singles – U R The Best Thing (which reached No.4), Take Me Away (No.18), Unforgiven (No.29), Blame It On Me (No.25) and the double A side Star / I Like It (No.26) – making it a 90s dance pop classic.

The BPI Silver certified album peaked at No.5 in 1993 and stayed in the UK Album Top 40 for 44 weeks, selling 500,000 copies.

D:Ream – Peter Cunnah and Alan Mackenzie – are currently working on a new studio album and will be touring throughout the summer, including a Glastonbury performance – one week before the General Election.
