Betty Boo returns with new album and single
By Steve Harnell | June 14, 2024
Betty Boo has announced news of a brand new album Rip Up The Rulebook, set to be released on 30 August.
The album will be preceded by lead single It Was Beautiful, released today (14 June) featuring Glaswegian drum and bass producer Hex. To mark the releases, Betty Boo plays the Islington Assembly tomorow night (15 June).
Rip Up The Rulebook finds Boo (aka Alison Clarkson) on rare form as she continues a songwriting roll that began during lockdown and saw the release of 2022’s Boomerang – the first new Boo music since 1992.
Her fourth studio album, Rip Up The Rulebook pays homage to Clarkson’s musical roots as a pioneer in the early UK hip-hop scene of the 80s. During that period, Alison wrote and self-produced music as one of the She Rockers, before ending up on tour supporting Public Enemy across the United States, several years before her hit singles in the early 90s.
The album’s title track finds Betty Boo duetting with one of the scene’s true originators, Grandmaster Caz – the author of the lyrics to Rapper’s Delight (and star of the 2012 film Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap which was executive produced by Clarkson).
“I loved making Boomerang so much that I kept writing. I’m very proud of these songs and grateful to be back creating music full time. The album title Rip Up The Rulebook is my response to stereotypical ideas about what women should be doing in their fifties. I have never had so much fun making music (with my friends Andy Wright and Gavin Goldberg). Long may it continue”.
